“Heliprof 2019” teaching award for Dr. Norbert Linz

The STEM subject students again honoured the post-doc scientist from the Institute of Biomedical Optics for his excellent teaching

Students in the STEM subjects (science, informatics/technology, engineering and mathematics) at the University of Lübeck regularly honour their favourite teachers. The 2019 award winner, Dr. Norbet Linz from the university’s Institute of Biomedical Optics, gives lectures on the “Foundations of Physics”, “Introduction to Biomedical Optics”, and the bachelor seminar “Biophotoics” as part of his post-doc work. The temporarily-held trophy, in the form of a golden helicopter, was officially awarded along with a certificate at the Students’ Committee Summer Party on 28 June 2019.

The teaching award is a well-established tradition and has been granted annually since the 2007 summer semester. Students in the STEM subjects are asked to base their choice on the teacher who they feel offers the best lessons, was particularly engaged with the students, or has had a decisive influence on their academic development thus far. Dr. Norbert Linz received both the highest number of overall votes in the online voting process and the most number of votes when scaled to class size, which made him the winner ahead of second-placed Prof. Dr Christian Hübner and Prof. Dr. Ralf Möller in third.

The former “Heliprofs” are Prof. Dr. Till Tantau (2018, 2014, 2010 and 2007), Prof. Dr. Lars Redecke (2017), Dr. Norbert Linz (2016), Prof. Dr. Philipp Rostalski (2015), Prof. Dr. Jürgen Prestin (2013), Dr. Dennis Pfisterer (2012), Prof. Dr. Christian Hübner (2011), Priv.-Doz. Dr. Dirk Langemann (2009) and Priv.-Doz. Dr. Hanns-Martin Teichert (2008).

This is the third award for teaching excellence that Dr. Norbert Linz has received, following the “Walter Dosch Teaching Award” for the lecture “Foundations of Physics” in the 2015 summer semester and the “Heliprof 2016” award. The class “Introduction to Biomedical Optics” was also voted one of the best lectures of the 2018 summer semester, receiving a rating of “very good” (1.2). The students have also nominated the class for the teaching award of the University of Lübeck, which this year is focused on the topic “research-based learning”.
