The university sent its graduates out into the world in a ceremonious and joyous fashion.
The 2019 summer semester ended on 13 July with the large farewell party at Saint Peter's University Church. A total of 264 state examinations, master’s degrees, and doctorates were completed in the past half year.
“Today is a special day: It is your day, dear graduates,” said the University President, Prof. Dr. Gabriele Gillessen-Kaesbach, in her address. She continued: “A day you will certainly remember for the rest of your lives. On behalf of the University of Lübeck, I congratulate you on the successful completion of your studies and wish you all the best for your professional and personal futures. Keep in touch.” Pastor Dr. Bernd Schwarze, the evening’s host, preceded the speech with a science and poetry slam that both surprised and delighted the attendees.
From medicine and informatics to mathematics and infection biology
Lisa Lübbe and Elodie Kabore-Wolff spoke on behalf of the graduates. As a parting gift from the university, all graduates received a picture of Lübeck from the artist Thomas Kleemann. The picture was introduced by Björn Engholm, Chairman of the Alumni, Friends and Patrons Society of the university. Music for the event was provided by the university’s orchestra and choir, with works from Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, John Dowland and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
The event was attended by graduates in medicine (86), medical engineering (28), psychology (18), molecular life science (18), mathematics in medicine and life science (7), informatics (6), medical informatics (6), media informatics (5), and infection biology (3). 58 doctorates were successfully completed in medicine, and 29 in the STEM (science, informatics/technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects.
Prior to the event in the university church, Mayor Jan Lindenau invited the graduates to a reception at Lübeck Town Hall, as in previous years. They then crossed the Markt to Saint Peter's for the main event.
